Rich Ross, President of Disney Channel Worldwide, is credited with saving the tv network since the 1990's with shows like Lizzie McGuire, That's So Raven, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Wizards of Waverly Place, and Sonny With A Chance. He's also largely responsible for the rise of Disney's current star franchises - Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers.
And Chief Executive Rob Iger loves some meaty franchises. Mm mmm
Now Ross is to "immediately take over" as chairman of Walt Disney Studios (no successor yet for Disney Channel). This may lead to more "companywide collaboration," as Iger desires. Previously the Studios have been more independent, without embracing "broader franchise building."
As previously mentioned here, lately Disney has been heavily relying on large fanatical franchises in an attempt to regain sunken revenue. This combined with someone great at promoting these franchises, I fear this will only mean more Disney sequels.
Also, considering Rich Ross is known for his work's appeal to ages 6-14, I'm wondering how he will do handling the upcoming projects that appeal to older age groups like the gothtastic Alice and Wonderland from Tim Burton, and video game based Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and continuing Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, both from Jerry Bruckheimer.
Ross' work also includes the launch of Disney XD, an attempt to appeal to more young boys, an area Disney was having a bit of difficulty with. Maybe this will aid in handling the marketing of new acquired Marvel.
That's a good point. It's going to be interesting how Rich Ross comes up with both popular and profitable ventures after his big successes, especially since Hilary Duff is now guest starring on Gossip Girl and the Jonas Brothers have their own movie. It's going to be hard to top that!
