According to a recent article in The New York Post, Disney is facing some troubles in vision and finance, citing the fact they've fairly recently acquired Pixar and Marvel while also financing Dreamworks. They see this as a dire need for new content.
Follow the jump.
Disney's also been hit by the recession, seen in their more frequent offers of discounted theme park tickets to draw in any bit of sales.
The article suggests Disney is sapped of new ideas or content, quoting that the company "shows no indication of a meterial pulling forward visitors" and "Disney will continue to watch the economy before deciding on how fast or steeply to change its promotional activities."
It's true Disney has recently shown much reliance on hits that "they own and that can be exploited across all its platforms," such as Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers (with CDs, shows, movies, video games, apparel, etc.). Likewise, they are rereleasing old films, like Nightmare Before Christmas and Toy Story in 3D (in 2006 and 2009 respectively). And making a sequel to Tron...
It seems even Disney's spirits and creativity have been hit hard by the recession. This is a shame since family films and animated works typically do better in time's of economic downfall thanks to the fantasy escape. Animators even see their work as "recession proof." Perhaps this is supported by the fact that Sony's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is top at the box office, grossing $60.5 million. Too bad it's not a Disney film.
this is so sad, but it's very true. Especially for Hannah Montana, as the Disney girl gets older, so do her fans. Since the range of the target market for Hannah Montana gets wider each year, Disney's efforts profiteer by creating various products for pre-teens/early teens(stationery, toys, party supplies, etc) are visible.
